Maastricht neighbourhoods, honestly

Where to live depending on your uni building, your budget, and whether you want to sleep at night.

Maastricht is small. Nothing is more than 20 minutes by bike from anything. But the areas feel different, and rent tracks that.

Centrum (Binnenstad)

Old town, the pretty bit. Walking distance to the law, arts and humanities faculties. Most expensive, loudest on weekends, most competition. Rooms €550 to €800.

Wyck

Across the river by the station. Cafés, bakeries, the best bit of the city if you ask locals. Slightly cheaper than the centre, still central. Good for anyone.

Randwyck

Where the health sciences, medicine and business faculties are (the SBE building is here). Lots of purpose-built student housing, quieter, a bit soulless, 10 minutes by bike to the centre. Best value if you study here.

Sint Pieter and Jekerkwartier

South, near the hill and the river. Green, calm, gorgeous. Fewer rooms, more studios and hospita (live-in landlord) situations. Great if you want quiet.

Brusselsepoort and Mariaberg

West of the centre. Normal residential Maastricht, cheaper, lots of student houses in the older streets. 8 minutes to the centre by bike.

Heugem, Scharn, Amby

Further out, family neighbourhoods, cheapest rooms, and more chance of registration being allowed because these are proper houses. 15 minutes by bike. Bus is fine too.

Across the border

Some students live in Belgium (Lanaken, Riemst) because rent is lower. It's doable, but registration, banking and insurance get more complicated. Ask before you commit.
