Erasmus and exchange students: finding a room for one semester

Five months is the hardest length to rent for. Where the short-stay rooms actually are, what they cost, and how to not get scammed in the rush.

Dutch landlords want 12 months. You want 5. That mismatch is why exchange students end up in hostels in September. Here's how to beat it.

Where semester rooms come from

  • Your host university first. Most universities reserve rooms for exchange students through their housing office or a partner (SSH, DUWO, Xior, the university guesthouse). The deadline is usually May or June for September. If you missed it, email anyway; there are cancellations in August.
  • HousingAnywhere. Built for exactly this: monthly contracts, book online, landlord verified. Filter for your dates. Casa shows these with the minimum-stay rule already checked.
  • Sublets from Dutch students on exchange themselves. They leave in the same semester you arrive. These go through Facebook groups and student networks, and now through Casa's "Post a room": free for them, free for you.
  • Hospita rooms. A room in someone's house. Often flexible on length, often cheaper, usually fine with registration. Casa flags these as "hospita" on the listing.

Set the filter right

In your Casa profile, put your real stay length. Listings that demand 12 months are marked "minimum stay" so you don't waste a message. Apartments sometimes accept 6 months; rooms in student houses almost never take under 12 unless it's a sublet.

Registration still matters

Staying over 4 months? You must register at the gemeente and you'll want a BSN for a bank account and a job. Under 4 months you can skip it, and then "no registration" rooms are suddenly fine for you. Tell Casa in your profile and the filter adapts.

The exchange-student scam

"I'm abroad, send the deposit and I'll post the keys." Exchange students are the number one target because they can't view in person. Insist on a video call in the room, or ask a student already in the city to view for you (your university's buddy programme exists for this). Never pay before that.
