Student jobs in the Netherlands for internationals

Where the jobs are, what the rules are (EU vs non-EU), the minimum wage by age, and how not to get underpaid.

Can you work?

EU/EEA and Swiss students: yes, without limits. Non-EU students: yes, but your employer needs a work permit (TWV) for you, and you're limited to 16 hours a week during the year or full-time in June, July and August. Big employers and student agencies know how to apply for the TWV; small cafés often don't bother, so aim for the agencies.

Everyone needs a BSN (registration guide), a Dutch bank account, and, if you work, Dutch basic health insurance. The insurance cost is mostly refunded through zorgtoeslag, so don't let it scare you.

Where the jobs are

  • Student job platforms. StudentJob and YoungCapital are the two big ones; both have English-language filters and thousands of hospitality, retail, delivery and call-centre shifts. Make a profile with a photo and you'll get called.
  • Your university. Student assistant, tutoring, ambassador and lab jobs pay better than hospitality and count as experience. Check the university's own vacancy page weekly.
  • Delivery. Thuisbezorgd, Flink, Picnic: fast to start, flexible, hard on rainy nights.
  • Tutoring and languages. Superprof and Preply for your native language; €15 to €25 an hour.
  • Events and catering. Agencies in every city, weekend-heavy, paid weekly.

What you should be paid

The Dutch minimum wage is per hour and depends on your age; it goes up every January and July. At 21+ it's above €14 an hour in 2026; at 18 to 20 it's a percentage of that. Check the current table on government.nl. Holiday allowance (8%) is on top. If a job pays cash "without contract", it's illegal and you have no protection.

Tax

You'll pay some tax on payslips. Most students earn under the threshold and get it all back with a tax return in the spring, through Belastingdienst with your DigiD. Takes 20 minutes, often several hundred euros.
