Rent too high? The government might pay part of it.
Huurtoeslag is money the Dutch government pays you every month toward your rent. Plenty of students qualify and never claim it. Some can't, and it's good to know which one you are before you count on it. Here's the honest version, plus a quick check you can share with your flatmates.
The self-contained rule.
The catch most students miss: to get huurtoeslag your place usually has to be self-contained. That means your own front door, your own kitchen and your own toilet, not shared with other households. A normal room in a shared student house usually doesn't qualify, unless the landlord has registered it for huurtoeslag. Not sure? Ask your landlord straight, or ask us and we'll help you check.
Can you get huurtoeslag?
Answer five quick things. It doesn't file anything, it just tells you where you stand. Share it with your flatmates too.
A quick guide based on 2026 rules, not an official decision. The rules changed in 2026, so the Belastingdienst calculator gives the real, binding number.
How to actually claim it.
The money isn't automatic, you have to apply. It takes about ten minutes once you're registered.
Get your BSN
Register at your address with the gemeente. No BSN, no huurtoeslag, so this comes first.
Log in with DigiD
Go to mijn.toeslagen.nl and sign in with DigiD. No DigiD yet? Request one once you're registered.
Apply for huurtoeslag
You'll need your monthly rent and a rough idea of your income for the year. That's it.
Don't sit on it
You can often claim from your move-in or the start of the year, so applying sooner can mean back-payments.
